On World Habitat Day, we were thrilled to celebrate the co-naming of East 6th Street between Avenues C & D as Jimmy Carter Way—just steps from Mascot Flats, where President and Mrs. Carter joined their first Habitat for Humanity build in 1984 on the Lower East Side.
That first build helped launch the Carter Work Project, which has since mobilized over 108,000 volunteers to build, renovate, or repair 4,400+ homes across 14 countries. Jimmy and Rosalynn’s partnership sparked a global movement rooted in humility, action, and service.
We were honored to mark this momentous occasion alongside Habitat for Humanity International CEO, Jonathan Reckford, former New York City Council Member for District 2, Carlina Rivera, Office of the New York City Public Advocate, Jumaane Williams, New York State Assembly Member 74th District, Harvey Epstein, Deputy Borough President of Manhattan, Keisha Sutton-James, Aura Olavarria, Don Kao, New York State Senator 27th District, Brian Kavanagh, Rev. Dr. Michael Edwards, Elder Cummings, Habitat homeowners, and community members.
Special thanks to our co-host, the New York City Council, for championing this project—and to our local partners who supported the celebration: Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Veselka, Casa Adela, Veniero’s, Anthony Collins, and New York University volunteers.

Thank you for being part of this journey to honor a legacy of service.
