Statement from the Haven Green development team on Appellate Court decision regarding Haven Green.
The Haven Green development team is thankful for the appellate court’s unanimous decision to advance construction of Haven Green and the establishment of a permanent and publicly-accessible green space in Little Italy.
Community engagement remains at the heart of our work to improve lives and communities through affordable homes, and we remain committed to listening to and partnering with the community to create a development that residents of the neighborhood will cherish. We empathize with those who fear losing green space. We are and have been listening. We undertook a comprehensive public participatory design process and will be looking to the community to continue to help us strengthen our collective vision for Haven Green.
Already, input from a wide array of community voices led us to an innovative deal that preserves abutting affordable homes and nearly doubles the publicly accessible green space in Haven Green. Built with the environment and neighborhood in mind, Haven Green will now deliver nearly 16,000 sq. ft. of publicly accessible open green space and 123 LGBTQ-friendly homes for low-income seniors, while preserving over 150 homes as affordable in the neighboring 40-year-old rental building that has been home to residents for decades.
Today’s decision is good news for our City and for all who wish to carry the spirit of the current space into the future. Together we can realize Haven Green as a model for sustainability, affordability, and inclusion in our City.
